“Together we can end domestic violence and sexual assault” is the resounding sentiment behind the NO MORE 5K taking place aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, Calif., April 21.
“For the past three years, Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow has partnered with the NO MORE organization to host a NO MORE 5 Kilometer Run/Walk in an effort to bring awareness to the issues surrounding sexual assault,” explained Michelle Lawing, installation sexual assault coordinator, in her command brief for the event.
The goal of the event is to promote awareness for Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month and also to promote dialogue about the topics of domestic violence and sexual assault which are often treated as taboo subjects.
On its website, NO MORE explains the following:
NO MORE is the first unifying symbol to express universal support for ending domestic violence and sexual assault in our society. NO MORE was conceived to amplify the power of the domestic violence and sexual assault movement using a unifying symbol to drive awareness and break down the barriers of stigma, silence and shame that keep people from talking about these issues and taking action to prevent them. Co-founded as a public/private partnership, NO MORE was created as a platform for those working to end domestic violence and sexual assault, in the belief that greater dialogue will fuel enhanced funding for direct service, advocacy and prevention.
The NO MORE 5K, coordinated by the Sexual Assault Prevention & Response Program, will begin and end at the Major James L. Day Conference Center on base. Registration/Check-ins will begin at 1 p.m. Opening remarks will be presented at 1:50 and the 5K will begin at 2 p.m. Upon completion of the 5K participants can recover in the JLD Conference Center with light snacks while visiting with Community Partners:
    • Desert Sanctuary/Haley House
    • Fort Irwin Sharp Program
    • Fort Irwin Family Advocacy Program
    • Greater Hope Foundation
    • Salvation Army
    • Semper Fit
    • DF Taco Food truck will be on site serving food during the event
