Lake Champlain Sailors met teachers and students at the schoolhouse for a quick introduction before accompanying them to a nearby park. Child at Street 11 is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping low income and dysfunctional families provide quality early years education for their children.
“These kids, who have plenty of reason to be upset or angry, met us with giant smiles that seemed to never go away,” said Lt. Aman Grant, Lake Champlain command chaplain. “We do community service events like this to try and make a small impact on foreign countries that we visit. We do it to put faces to the word ‘Navy’ and to show that we’re people too and we’re here to help.”
Sailors chaperoned the students during a walk to a nearby park for fun and games.
“When we walked into the schoolhouse you could immediately see all of the kids’ faces light up,” said Fire Controlman 2nd Class Michael Putnam, from Eugene, Oregon. “When we got to the park they all came up to us and wanted us to play games with them and talk to us. It’s a very joyous and refreshing thing to take part in and it’s definitely something I’m going to remember.”
The visit ended with the students presenting a hand-painted sign to the Sailors that read ‘Welcome US Navy’ and requests to come back soon.
U.S. Navy aircraft carrier strike groups have regularly patrolled the Indo-Asia-Pacific for more than 70 years and will continue to do so. Lake Champlain is a part of the Carl Vinson Strike Group, which has deployed to the region several times, starting with a deployment to the Western Pacific in 1983, a year after commissioning. Most recently in 2015, Vinson conducted port visits and exercises with regional navies in the South China Sea.
U.S. 3rd Fleet leads naval forces in the Pacific and provides the realistic, relevant training necessary for an effective global Navy. Third Fleet constantly coordinates with U.S. 7th Fleet to plan and execute missions based on their complementary strengths to promote ongoing peace, security, and stability throughout the entire Pacific theater of operations.
