CAMP GRUBER, Okla. – More than 250 Oklahoma Army National Guard (OKARNG) recruits with the Recruit Sustainment Program (RSP), Recruiting and Retention Command, competed in the program’s annual Warrior Challenge over the weekend at Camp Gruber, near Braggs, Oklahoma.

The Warrior Challenge is an annual competition that tests the physical and mental preparedness of Oklahoma Army National Guard recruits prior to the beginning of their Basic Combat Training (BCT) or Advanced Individual Training (AIT).

A few of the Warrior Challenge events include an Army Physical Fitness Test, an obstacle course, a road march, and a military skills practical exercise. These grueling tasks are designed to test a recruit’s preparedness for future military training.

Throughout the year, the RSP coordinates and trains OKARNG recruits, to prepare them for the challenges of Basic Combat Training and military life.

At any given time, Oklahoma’s RSP tracks and trains upwards of 400 recruits and coordinates more than 800 recruits per year through the process of joining the OKARNG.

“It’s about giving Soldiers the base of knowledge they need to be successful in basic training,” said Sgt. 1st Class Wesley Parra, RSP cadre for Hotel Troop.

For the Soldiers of the RSP, the Warrior Challenge is not only about training Soldiers; it is also about teamwork, esprit de corps and pride.

“We have three trophies we will present,” Parra said. “One for the best male team, one for the best female team, and one for the best coed team.”

The trophies remain with the unit of the winning team until the next Warrior Challenge, giving them a year’s worth of bragging rights and to inspire a healthy and competitive edge.
