BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan - U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to Task Forces Flying Dragons and Fighting Eagles held a Transfer of Authority ceremony at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, April 9, 2017.
TF Fighting Eagles, led by the command team of 2nd Battalion, 1st Aviation Regiment, 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, officially completed its deployment of eight months in Afghanistan with the ceremony.
“Your work here was impressive and you should be proud of your accomplishments,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Jacob J. Dlugosz, TF Fighting Eagles Commander. “Most importantly, all those who deployed are coming home.”
During their time in Afghanistan, TF Fighting Eagles flew 13,000 hours completing hundreds of deliberate and hasty air assaults, reconnaissance and security missions and 111 medical evacuations. They also transported 26,764 personnel, including 2,500 VIPs.
“You have added to the storied legacy of the 1st Infantry Division,” said U.S. Army Col. John Cyrulik, 1st CAB commander.
“I’m incredibly humbled to have been part of such a fine formation of combat veterans,” said Dlugosz.
The TF Fighting Eagles team has spent several weeks conducting a Relief in Place with TF Flying Dragons to ensure a successful transition. TF Flying Dragons was able to begin taking on missions in the days prior to the TOA.
“Your professionalism during the RIP was impressive and sincerely appreciated,” said Cyrulik.
“I have been overwhelmed by the support and teamwork from Task Force Fighting Eagles,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Sean M. O’Connell, TF Flying Dragons commander.
The 2nd Battalion, 1st Aviation Regiment was constituted on Oct. 23, 1963. It has served in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan during its storied history.
The 52nd Aviation Battalion (Combat) was constituted on May 31, 1940. It has served in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan and is stationed at Fort Wainwright, Alaska.
