FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa. – Pfc. Duriq Coles, from Philadelphia, serves as a health care specialist for the 108th Area Support Medical Company, 213th Regional Support Group, Pennsylvania Army National Guard.
Coles said his desire to serve as a military medic started when he was 15 years old. He attended the Philadelphia Military Academy at Leeds, where he was a member of the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. He learned the basic duties of a first responder and became first responder certified in JROTC.
He learned disaster relief during real life experiences including humanitarian efforts in response to Hurricane Sandy. He assisted the local fire company by helping victims of power outages caused by the hurricane with refrigerated medication.
After graduating from the academy, he joined the military and completed his advanced individual training at the Department of Combat Medic Training in Fort Sam Houston.
In addition to being a military medic he serves as an emergency medical technician in Delaware County in his civilian life. He said his experience in the military has greatly helped him as an EMT. During emergency situations, Coles said his military experience helps him react quickly and efficiently.
“My training in the military, both tactically and medically, is very valuable,” said Coles. “I want to use this experience in the future to help people.”
Coles said that in the future he would like to work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in a position that would allow him to blend medical technology with his military training and law enforcement.
