CENTENNIAL, Colo. - The Colorado Army National Guard Youth Program Department will host its third annual Month of the Military Child event at The Island, Aurora, April 8, 7 - 10 p.m.

Military child and youth programs of all military service branches around the world celebrate MOMC during April. Each child and youth program celebrates its unique preference so events and activities vary greatly from installation to installation.

The Island has indoor beach-style sand volleyball courts with open areas for other activities. This year’s event includes: a disk jockey, a professional break dance show, balloon twister, caricature artists, a giant piñata, food, unlimited fountain drinks, group games, prizes, and more.

"I've attended this event for the past two years and will attend this event, as well,” said Charlene Shields, COARNG Family Program director. “The youth always have a great time and love the special recognition that's provided to them. It's an important time of year that allows our military youth to connect with each other and build a community, which, in turn, supports and strengthens our military families. The youth team and volunteers always do an excellent job planning and carrying out this great celebration.”

The event marks the largest MOMC celebration since the COARNG Youth Program’s inception during 2006. About 150 participants have registered including Army and Air National Guard children from around the state ranging from 6 - 18 years old, youth program employees and volunteers, teens from the Youth Advisory Council, and parents.

The goal of the MOMC program is to recognize and honor military youth for their role and service in the military family. The entire family sacrifices through the demands of military service, which brings about the slogan, "We Serve Too," reminding us that youth play an important part in the development of a resilient military family.
