    USAMU PAO
FORT BENNING, Ga. – The U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) competitive shooting teams work daily to be the best marksmen in the world. Here is a review of their accomplishments for the week ending March 26.

    Competitions
Sgt. Benjamin Cleland of the Service Rifle Team, from Swanton, Ohio, placed first in the Tactical Division of the 2017 Accuracy International Long Range Classic Precision Rifle Series (PRS) event in Baker, Florida, March 9-13.

Sgt. 1st Class Eric Uptagraff of the International Rifle Team, from Spokane, Washington, won the 2017 National Rifle Association (NRA) Smallbore Metric Prone National Championships and placed second in the 59th Western Wildcats 6400 American Prone Match in Phoenix, Arizona, March 12-20.

Staff Sgt. Christopher Broussard of the Instructor Training Group, competed at the 2017 United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) Alabama Precision Tactical Sectional in Dothan, Alabama, in the pistol limited division.

Staff Sgt. Brandon Welch of the Instructor Training Group (ITG), from Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Staff Sgt. Daniel Sugimoto of the ITG, also competed at the USPSA event. Welch and Sugimoto competed in the pistol open and production pistol divisions respectively.

The Service Rifle team enjoyed a successful week at the 2017 Bayou Rifles Regional and Excellence in Competition (EIC) matches in Rosharon, Texas, March 22-27. The USAMU Four-Man Rifle Team coached by Sgt. 1st Class Shane Barnhart, from Delaware, Ohio, fired the highest score in match history and beat the second place team, who was also from USAMU, by 37 points.

The team members were Sgt. 1st Class Brandon Green, from Bogalusa, Louisiana; Staff Sgt. Amanda Elsenboss, from Woodbury, Connecticut; Sgt. Augustus Dunfey, from Plymouth, New Hampshire; and Sgt. Benjamin Cleland, from Swanton, Ohio.

Green took first place in the individual match, followed by fellow USAMU Soldiers Dunfey and Cleland in second and third place respectively.

Sgt. 1st Class Daniel Crody of the Service Rifle Team, from Cotopaxi, Colorado, won the Excellence in Competition match with Sergeants Dunfey and Cleland finishing in second and third behind him.

After fielding several questions about firing positions from junior marksmen on the range, members from the Service Rifle Team conducted a class and answered questions from the marksmen and their parents. As the team travels to different state, regional, and national matches, AMU Soldiers not only compete but answer questions about the Army and shooting. Taking advantage of this opportunity allows the team to positively interact with community members and connect America to its Army.

Staff Sgt. Brad Balsley of the Action Shooting Team, from Uniontown, Pennsylvania, competed at the 2017 U.S. Practical Shooting Association Optic Nationals in Frostproof, Florida, March 24-26. Balsley won the “High Military” class and placed fourth overall in open competition that included 300 competitors.

USPSA Nationals are the most prestigious of all USPSA matches held throughout the country. This match routinely draws the best shooters from around the country.

Staff Sgt. Tyler Payne of the Action Shooting Team, from Princeton, Minnesota, competed at the 2017 Long Range Shooting Experience PRS match in Park City, Ky., March 23-27.

Payne placed third in an extremely difficult match that included some of the top competitors in the country.
