WASHINGTON (NNS) – Navy surgeon general Vice Adm. Forrest Faison spoke on a panel about the future of Navy Medicine and improving and maintaining high combat survivability at the Navy League's 2017 Sea-Air-Space Exposition at National Harbor, Maryland, Apr. 5.

Faison was joined by Rear Adm. Stephen Pachuta, director of health services headquarters United States Marine Corps, and Medical Officer of the Marine Corps; Rear Adm. Colin Chinn, director of research, development and acquisition, Defense Health Agency and Read Adm. Cathal O’Connor, commander, Expeditionary Strike Group III.

“When parents across America allow their son or daughter to join the Navy or Marine Corps, they trust us to take care of them,” said Faison. “It’s our responsibility to make good on that promise.”

Each member of the panel represented Navy Medicine’s most important customers, the Navy and Marine Corps.

Navy Medicine contributes to these organizations by delivering fleet surgical teams and corpsmen, for example, to be ready to deploy and provide care at a moment’s notice.

“We are constantly training to ensure our fleet surgical teams are trained and ready for the challenges ahead,” said O’Connor.

The panel also discussed the history of military medicine and the great strides that have been made to make military medicine what it is today, but noted there is still significant work to be done to maintain the high survivability rate we have achieved.

“The research and innovation being done in the fleet and on the battlefield are critical,” said Pachuta “this research will ensure we continue to maintain a high survivability rate into the future.”

Navy Medicine is a global health care network of 63,000 personnel that provide health care support to the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, their families and veterans in high operational tempo environments, at expeditionary medical facilities, medical treatment facilities, hospitals, clinics, hospital ships and research units around the world.

The Navy League's Sea-Air-Space Exposition was founded in 1965 as a means to bring the U.S. defense industrial base, U.S. private-sector companies and key military decision makers together for an annual innovative, educational, professional and maritime-based event located in the heart of Washington, D.C. Sea-Air-Space is the largest maritime exposition in the U.S. and continues as an invaluable extension of the Navy League's mission of maritime policy education and sea service support.
