Chief Master Sgt. David W. Stevens assumed responsibility as the 167th Wing Command Chief from Chief Master Sgt. Ronald R. Glazer, Sr. during a ceremony at the Minuteman Statue at the 167th in Martinsburg, W.Va., April 1.
The wing command chief is the principal advisor to the commander and his senior staff on matters of health, welfare and morale, professional development, and the effective utilization of more than 900 enlisted personnel assigned to the wing.
Stevens is the 7th command chief for the wing. He began his military service as a Marine in 1984, he entered the Marine Corps Reserve based in Frederick, MD in 1988.
Stevens deployed with the Marines in support of Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm in 1990. He joined the 167th in June 1992 as a traditional guard member with the 167th Civil Engineering Squadron’s Emergency Management flight.
Stevens was activated following the events of 9/11 and deployed in October of 2001 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Stevens returned home in February 2002 and remained on duty with the 167th taking over the Emergency Management flight as a fulltime technician in the fall of 2002. He deployed in 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
In 2013 Stevens was reassigned as the Operations Superintendent for the 167th Security Forces Squadron. He served in that capacity until he was selected as the wing command chief.
Stevens said, “Being a leader isn't about power, promotion, or money, being a leader means having the responsibility of service to others, to the people who follow you.”
Colonel Shaun J. Perkowski, the commander of the 167th said, although the wing command chief is changing the care, the compassion, the standards, the accountability, and the respect are not going to change.
Glazer served in the Army and Maryland Army National Guard before joining the 167th. He was a personnelist and communications information technology specialist for the wing prior to being named the wing command chief in 2012.
“He [Glazer] has set the bar high. He has shown care and compassion for this wing that is unprecedented,” Perkowski said.
Steven said he plans to continue to deliberately develop our Airman and prepare them for their future leadership roles and looks forward to interacting with the 167th Airmen and their families.
