Know the cost, drive drunk, get pulled over.

JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, AK, UNITED STATES

Story by Airman 1st Class Kyle Johnson

    Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson

Security forces and military Police have noticed an increased number of drunken driving incidents on base since January.

Attempting to drive while intoxicated is never a good idea. Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson offers alternative options for folks who find themselves in an unexpectedly intoxicated state – and trained law enforcement personnel for those who fail to use those options.

“We operate with Alaska State Troopers and Anchorage Police Department in the standard field sobriety testing course as well as the advanced roadside impairment detection course,” said Wesley Rath, a lead police officer assigned to the 673d Security Forces Squadron.

Joint Base Against Drunk Driving offers free rides to service members who find themselves in a situation they can’t drive out of.

“No names are being reported at all,” said Air Force Staff Sgt. Jayson Dictaan, JBADD president. “We just put how many people were picked up, and what location, and that’s it. The commander is more concerned with the numbers, not with the individuals we pick up. It’s a good thing that you call us, because you’re doing a favor for the community and you’re doing the right thing.”

Renee Napier, who lost her daughter, Meagan, to a drunken driver will be sharing her story -- and showing exactly what kind of difference in the community JBADD can make -- at the Frontier Theater and Talkeetna theaters April 3.

Making a plan costs a few minutes, not making a plan can cost years of your life – and someone else’s.

“They have to have a plan to come on base. Call a taxi or a team leader, or supervisor. Everyone’s here to help you,” said William Pehrson, a police officer assigned to the 673d Security Forces Squadron.

Know who to call before leaving the house -- whether it be a friend, family member or someone in the chain of command. Some taxi companies offer vehicle pickup services, Rath said.

Drunken driving always costs more than it saves.

“The police officers at JBER are very confident that if you try to drive on our installation drunk, you’re going to wind up in jail,” Pehrson said.
