The first days of spring witnessed two important milestones in the history of Naval Health Clinic Annapolis: Closing the doors to its historic Hospital Point location and opening the doors to its new North Severn clinic at 695 Kinkaid Road. At 7:24 p.m. March 27, 2017, the ensign was ceremoniously lowered for the last time after 110 years of continuous patient care at 250 Wood Road on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Academy. The following morning, the flag was raised for the first time at its new North Severn location. These historic events precede the new clinic grand opening on May 10, 2017 at 10 a.m. which is expected to draw federal, state and city dignitaries.

“Though it is difficult to say goodbye to building 250 and Hospital Point, we are comforted by the fact that it will remain in dedicated service to the brigade of midshipmen and the Naval Academy,” said Capt. Michael B. McGinnis, commanding officer, Naval Health Clinic Annapolis. “We will always be able to come back and reflect on the outstanding care rendered to our nation’s heroes.”

Naval Health Clinic Annapolis first opened its doors at Hospital Point in 1907 and was the oldest military treatment facility in Navy Medicine to continuously care for patients. During one period in its history, the hospital had 333 beds with the ability to expand to 480. The old officers and nurses quarters for the hospital remain standing behind the clinic and are used for offices today. Hospital Point consistently demonstrated its ability to change with the needs of the time. The building transitioned from a hospital to a clinic in 1979. In 2004, the medical clinic became a health clinic with the integration of dental services.

The new 101,500 square foot state-of-the-art clinic is conveniently located near military housing, commissary and the Navy Exchange. The clinic blends the latest medical technologies with environmentally sustainable design.

“Eight years in the making, our new $43.5 million facility is now on par with the expert patient-centered care we deliver to our Navy and Marine Corps family,” said McGinnis. “Our new clinic will help us realize our vision of being the premier choice for patients and staff.”

Naval Health Clinic Annapolis’s team of approximately 400 military, civilian and contract staff care for over 14,000 patients. Outpatient services include primary care (family medicine, pediatrics and internal medicine) and specialty care (from aviation and sports medicine to mental health and physical therapy). It is optimized in the health and readiness of the brigade of midshipmen, operational forces, and patients at Annapolis, Maryland; the branch health clinics in Philadelphia and Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania; and Earle and Lakehurst, New Jersey.
