    311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. – Brig. Gen. David E. Elwell, 311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command commanding general, and Command Sgt. Maj. Grady Blue, 311th ESC command sergeant major, conducted a command-wide readiness training session at the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base March 1-4.

Col. Toni Glover, 650th Regional Support Group commander, Col. Chris Barra, 304th Sustainment Brigade commander, and Col. Vince Rice, 653rd RSG commander, brought their command teams to Los Alamitos to focus on combat readiness.

“The purpose of this command readiness training is to get all of the 311th ESC units in one place and take action to improve both collective and individual readiness to ensure that every unit in the 311th ESC is ready to answer the nations’ call,” said Brig. Gen. Elwell.

The Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base’s drill hall was filled with work stations, where command teams could talk to subject matter experts who then evaluated and guided them to better bring their unit to combat readiness.

“As the teams rotated and worked their way through the different stations, we made on the spot corrections and expedited unit readiness,” said Brig Gen. Elwell. “During this part of individual readiness, we could schedule Soldiers who need schools, medical appointments, and assist Soldiers who are below the standard in AFPT, weapons qualifications, unsatisfactory participation and other areas of individual readiness.”

During the collective readiness part of this training, the brigade commanders briefed the general on their TY 2018 Yearly Training Calendar, Yearly Training Plan, and presented their FY 2018 Budget Requirements. Detailed readiness plans were designed to meet or exceed the USAR standard in all areas of individual and collective readiness.

Effective training is the Army’s number one priority during peacetime. Training management is the process used by Army leaders to identify training requirements and then plan, resource, execute and evaluate training.

This annual briefing allows brigade and battalion commanders a chance to discuss training concepts, philosophies and challenges with their ESC.

“This event is the direct result of months of planning and coordination, syncing Yearly Training Briefings and Command Readiness sessions, culminating in a cohesive team building Dining Out dinner,” said Col. Laurence Linton, 311th ESC chief of staff. “The opportunity for key leadership and staff from the company level through ESC headquarters to interact daily and directing action requirements to improve readiness immediately has been priceless.”

Brig Gen. Elwell was thoroughly engaged in the briefings, making sure that the information put out was understood by all. During those sessions, he asked pertinent questions and highlighted guidance from the commander of the USARC, the 79th Sustainment Support Command and his own command guidance.
