The U.S. Navy announced its intent to prepare a Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to the July 2016 Final EIS for Land-Water Interface (LWI) and Service Pier Extension (SPE), NBK-Bangor, Wash.
The Final EIS for LWI and SPE resulted in a Record of Decision (ROD) signed on Sept. 8, 2016 for the LWI project only, and a decision of the SPE was deferred at the time pending availability of funding. Now that the SPE project has been funded, the Supplemental EIS will address the SPE project only and evaluate impacts to affected resources based on small changes in project design and new regulatory guidelines released since the September ROD. All public comments previously received on this project are still valid.
The Proposed Action’s purpose is to support the mission of NBK-Bangor to serve as the host command for the Navy’s fleet throughout west Puget Sound and provide base operating services, including support for surface ships and submarines homeported at NBK-Bangor and Bremerton.
The Proposed Action is needed to provide alternative opportunities for berthing to mitigate restrictions at NBK Bremerton and to improve the long-term efficiency and effectiveness of the three SEAWOLF Class submarines on NBK.
