SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. - The 50th Space Wing Inspector General office recently brought home two Air Force Space Command awards.

The IG office earned the Maj. Gen. Junius W. Jones IG Award and Lou Fischer, 50 SW IG director of inspections, earned the Howard W. Leaf IG Award.

The Maj. Gen. Junius W. Jones IG Award, created in 2014, recognizes the outstanding commander's inspection program whose performance is proactive as well as above and beyond the completion of day-to-day mission requirements.

“The Junuis W. Jones IG Award was the big one for us because it tells us we’re doing what we need to do for the wing commander,” said Fischer.

Meanwhile, the Howard W. Leaf Inspector General awards recognize the outstanding inspector in the grade of second lieutenant through colonel or in the grade of GS-12 through GS-15 assigned to a wing IG team.

“We’re making sure we’re conducting inspections, exercises and being honest brokers to the wing commander and pointing out risks and deficiencies,” said Fischer.

The 50 SW IG office serves 16 tenant units, 10 geographically separated units and 8,100 members.

“The 50 SW IG Office has won the Maj. Gen. Junius W. Jones IG Award before,” said Lt. Col. Rickie Banister, 50 SW Inspector General. “Most of us weren’t here during that time. Coming into an organization that already has proven to be the best in AFPSC is not an easy task. For the newer people, their job is to find ways to improve it.”

With aspirations to further improve the Commander’s Inspection Program, the IG office strives for excellence in their daily tasks.

“It’s definitely a team effort and everybody brings something to the table,” said Fischer. “It’s interesting to see other people’s perspective and that’s how you evolve. I think this is a phenomenal team and the awards are a testament to what they do every day.”

The 50 SW IG office will now compete at the Air Force level and winners will be announced later this year.
