The 22nd Medical Group recognized Patient Safety Awareness Week March 12 – 18.

Spearheaded by the National Patient Safety Foundation, Patient Safety Awareness Week is a national education and awareness-building campaign for improving patient safety. The Department of Defense’s focus for this year’s campaign was to recognize the role that health-care providers, non-clinical staff, patients and families play in keeping patients safe.

“We preach and practice patient safety every single day of the year, but this week is just set aside to highlight to everybody outside of our facilities how much emphasis we put on patient safety,” said Lt. Col. Joshua Hartman, 22nd Medical Group chief of medical staff.

The 22nd MDG staff participated in refresher activities throughout the week. One event required medical personnel to find errors in a staged exam room.

“We get so used to seeing our exam rooms and our equipment rooms set up perfectly day in and day out that some days we might not notice [minor discrepancies when they arise],” said Hartman.

The campaign also focused on educating patients and included an information booth set up in the clinic pharmacy.

“We really want our patients to be engaged with their own healthcare and their own safety, so when they are seeing something that’s not right, we want them to feel empowered to speak up,” he said.

The campaign comes just a few weeks after the 22nd MDG was reaccredited by the Joint Commission, which certified the clinic as a safe and effective healthcare organization.

“With the patients’ help we can improve our processes and continue down our path to becoming a highly reliable organization,” said Devin June, 22nd MDG patient safety program coordinator.
