JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md.,
Lt. Gen. Gina Grosso, U.S. Air Force Manpower, Personnel and Services deputy chief of staff, spoke to approximately 50 military members and DOD civilians attending the Women’s History Month luncheon at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, March 10.
This event kicked of Women’s History Month, where Grosso spoke on this year’s topic, “Honoring Women in Business and Labor,” as well as diversity and service.
“I worked hard to get where I am,” Grosso said. “I had a bit of luck, and a lot of support from my family and mentors.”
Grosso stressed that her hard work in her education and dedication to service is what led her to becoming the first female A1, the position she is currently in.
“My ego isn’t tied up in being a general,” Grosso said. “It’s tied up in doing a good job.”
Grosso entered in the U.S. Air Force in 1986. During her time in the Air Force, Grosso has held a number of command and staff positions, and most recently, the Air Force Sexual Assault Prevention and Response director. In her present role, she is responsible for policies regarding military and civilian personnel in education and training, compensation, and resource allocation.
While ascending in the ranks in the Air Force, Grosso continued to pursue her education, including completing two masters and becoming a fellow at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University in 2004.
“To millions of women and men across the world, Grosso is a living example that anything is possible,” said Col. Julie Grundahl, 11th Wing and JBA vice commander. “We are truly inspired by her example and her service.”
In her closing remarks to the luncheon guests, Grosso spoke on diversity and how it was important to building a competitive work force and total fighting force.
“We know from all kinds of research that to have the most competitive workforce, we have to have diversity,” Grosso said. “We’re not there yet. There is still work to be done.”
