Fleet Cyber Command Celebrates Women’s History Month

FORT GEORGE G. MEADE, Md. (NNS) – Sailors and civilians assigned to U.S. Fleet Cyber Command / U.S. 10th Fleet (FCC/C10F) gathered for a Women’s History Month celebration Mar. 9.

The event, coordinated by the command’s multi-cultural committee, began with opening remarks from Capt. James Mills, FCC/C10F chief of staff. He spoke about the past contributions of women in the military, the critical role of women in today’s armed forces and the importance of recognizing diversity in the Navy and Department of Defense.

This year’s theme, “Honoring Trailblazing Women,” is dedicated to the exceptional women who have broken down barriers and triumphed in both military and public service.

Members of the committee gave a presentation highlighting the accomplishments of four influential women who served in the military and government: Dr. Sheila Widnall, Command Master Chief Evelyn Banks (retired), U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Lori Reynolds, and Ms. Tracey Pinson.

“It was very humbling to be a part of this ceremony,” said Information Systems Technician Seaman Kiana Fortin, a member of the multi-cultural committee and native of Las Vegas, Nev. “I learned a lot about the sacrifices that women have made throughout history and how they paved the way for women like me to serve today. Their accomplishments inspire me in my own career.”

U.S. Fleet Cyber Command serves as the Navy component command to U.S. Strategic Command and U.S. Cyber Command, and the Navy’s Service Cryptologic Component commander under the National Security Agency/Central Security Service. Fleet Cyber Command also reports directly to the Chief of Naval Operations as an Echelon II command.

U.S. 10th Fleet is the operational arm of Fleet Cyber Command and executes its mission through a task force structure similar to other warfare commanders. In this role, C10F provides operational direction through its Maritime Operations Center located at Fort George Meade Md., executing command and control over assigned forces in support of Navy or joint missions in cyber/networks, information operations, electronic warfare, cryptologic/signals intelligence and space.
