    II Marine Expeditionary Force

Needles and medical gauze are laid in a neat, fashioned order on a table as sailors from 2nd Dental Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group prepare for an arduous, long day in the field as part of the Authorized Dental Allowance List exercise at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, March 7, 2017. The exercise consisted of sailors performing dental exams, dental operations and sterilizing equipment in a field environment where supplies are limited and the environment is chaotic.

“This is practice for the field,” said Navy Lt. Jesse Froehner, a dental officer with the unit. “The intent behind this exercise is to maintain dental readiness and unit readiness by qualifying our corpsmen and dental personnel in a field environment. This way we can provide our services to [service members] out in the field or deployed.”

A field environment with rough terrain, harsh weather and limited supplies can make any medical professional rethink their situation, but sailors with 2nd Dental Battalion face the problems head on and and overcome all odds to provide a clean, safe environment for the Marines out on the field.

“The Marine Corps is always doing something somewhere. As corpsmen, we have to be ready at a moment’s notice,” said Navy seaman Wimverzack Redd, a corpsman with the unit. “This exercise helps us develop a sense of what it’s like in the field. It gets us out of our comfort zone and helps us gain experience that we couldn’t get at a hospital or clinic.”

Redd said the best part about the exercise is meeting Marines from all walks of life, getting to know them, and preparing them for dental exams. Redd also added that it satisfies him to know that he is a part of a bigger picture and helping Marines is the right step in mission accomplishment.

Anyone serving in the Marine Corps knows that the Navy’s corpsmen are always right next to them regardless of the situation, whether it’s in training or on the front lines. They are responsible for providing a broad range of healthcare services from dental care to emergency care. Regardless of branch service Marines rely on the corpsmen and consider them brothers amongst the elite.
