SAN ANTONIO – Students from a local high school toured several spaces of the Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) on Joint Base San Antonio – Fort Sam Houston, Texas, March 2 as part of an ongoing partnership with Navy Medicine Training Support Center (NMTSC).
NMTSC has been working with John Marshall High School for almost three years to help increase awareness of the students’ options after graduation, which could include a career in Navy Medicine or the military in general.
“I believe that exposing our kids to the different medical fields is our primary goal,” said Frank Mascorro, a teacher at John Marshall. “But also letting them know there are other avenues that they can go through, one of them being the armed services, and knowing that there are different fields that they can go into here. Knowing that they don’t actually have to pay for school but they can get that paid for through the services, I think that for them is very beneficial.”
The tour started with a basic introduction to METC and some of the programs offered. Then the students were broken into smaller groups so they could tour the different areas of the campus. Tours were conducted by Navy hospital corpsmen (HM) instructors who work at the schoolhouse and volunteered their time for what they felt was an important event.
“I think it’s a great opportunity,” said Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Fritzi Marroquin, an HM “A” School instructor and tour conductor. “I wish that when I was in high school we could’ve had the opportunity to see all the options that are out there. So actually going to the different schools and meeting the different Navy personnel and learning what they do, I think that’s awesome. I think the students actually enjoyed it too, to see that there are actually options out there besides just in the civilian sector.”
The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) efforts at NMTSC are focused mostly on the science and technology available in Navy Medicine today. With this tour, the high school students were able to see some of the more detailed areas of medical science in the Navy as they got to experience firsthand several of the HM “C” Schools offered at METC, including medical laboratory technician, respiratory therapist, dental lab technician and preventative medicine.
Some of the high school students were so impressed they even walked away from the tour with the thought of possibly joining one day.
“I just liked seeing everything,” said high school student Morgan McDowall. “Everything was so high-tech. That was really cool. Everything seemed so based toward the future, and toward my future. It’s definitely an option for me now.”
