SKWIERZYNA, Poland – Soldiers of 64th Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat team, 4th Infantry Division, participated in a memorial run here Feb. 26 honoring Polish veterans during the Cold War in eastern Europe.

This run paid homage to the “Cursed Soldiers” who were underground resistance fighters from 1945-63 during the communist rule of Poland.

More than 100 Soldiers from the 64th BSB participated in the run, joining the 35th Polish Missile Defense Squadron and Skwierzyna residents in an exhibition of unity and freedom now celebrated in this country.

“It’s important to honor the country we are deployed in by recognizing their history and sacrifices they made to operate in the current free environment we are in,” said Sgt. Jeremy McGary of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 64th BSB.

“Fortunately for us, we are welcomed by the Polish people and have been accepted by their military and population as we conduct our missions in a friendly environment,” said McGary.

The race goes beyond Skwierzyna, with similar events occurring in more than 160 cities globally, including in New York and Chicago. In 2015, approximately 40,000 people participated in runs around the world.

“It was really gratifying running alongside the Polish people,” said Capt. Michael Whitted, commander, Company A, 64th BSB. “The history being honored underscored why we are here as part of Atlantic Resolve, helping preserve the liberties these citizens now enjoy as we serve here as a deterrent against any acts of aggression against Poland.”
