Volunteers from the Tri-command helped celebrate Read Across America Week with the students of Joseph S. Shanklin Elementary School Mar. 1.

Volunteers from Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, and Naval Hospital Beaufort picked a book and read it to a class of
    children from grades 1-5.

“To celebrate Read Across America Week, we designated a theme for each of the days,” said Kelsie Tudela, the media specialist for Shanklin Elementary. “Monday was door decoration day where classes decorated their classroom door with a Dr. Seuss theme. Tuesday was crazy sock day. Wednesday is guest reader day. Thursday is crazy hat day for ‘The 500 Hats Of Bartholomew Cubbins’ and Friday is book character parade day. Today was guest reader day where volunteers from the Tri-command came in and read to 24 classes.”

According to the National Education Association, Read Across America is an annual reading program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading
on March 2, the birthday of children’s author Dr. Seuss.

Read Across America also provides NEA members, parents and children the resources and activities they needto keep reading on the calendar 365 days a year. In cities and towns across the nation, teachers, teenagers, librarians, politicians, actors, athletes, parents, grandparents, and others develop NEA’s Read Across America activities to bring reading excitement to children of all ages.

Governors, mayors, and other elected officials recognize the role reading plays in their communities. Athletes and actors issue reading challenges to young readers.

Instead of using school faculty to read to the kids, the school wants to reach out to the Tri-command and let the kids see new faces and career opportunities after high school.

“This school is a title one school which means most of the children in attendance here are either at or below poverty,” said Tudela. “It is good for the Navy or Marines to come in and give the kids a chance to see that there is something after High School and to show them that reading is important.”

Aside from just reading to the kids, some of the volunteers asked the children questions and interacted with them.

“You have to have a little bit of fun with it,” said Sgt. Bryan Fonseca, a Marine with Weapons and Field Battalion aboard MCRD Parris Island. “You should interact with the children and not just look like a stranger who just came to read a book. These kids look up to you, you may not see it but they do. Because they see you reading this book it might motivate them to want to go out and read too. You are affecting these children’s lives just by giving up only 30 minutes of your own.”
