FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa. – Liberty USO of Fort Indiantown Gap hosted an ice cream social provided by Karen Mojecki, a Gold Star Mother, in honor of her son’s birthday here Feb. 19.

On an abnormally warm and sunny February Sunday, volunteers set up tables decked with a variety of ice cream flavors and all the fixings you could imagine to dish out to service members and their families. Throughout the afternoon, visitors came to indulge their sweet tooth, play games, socialize and relax on the comfortable couches and watch television.

“I wanted to do something on his birthday that would touch the men and women who served with him,” said Mojecki.

She added that her son, Maj. Wesley James Hinkley, always liked ice cream, so what better way to celebrate his birthday and honor both his life and his fellow Veterans than with an ice cream social?

Brig. Gen. Tony Carrelli, Pennsylvania’s adjutant general and cabinet-level appointee for the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, took part in the event to show support for Veterans and their families.

As Mojecki shared photos and memories of her son, Wes, with Carrelli, he thanked her for her continued service to Veterans and their families and for maintaining her connection to the military family, which benefits everyone.

Larry Suhr, who retired from the Navy 40 years ago, and his daughter Emily volunteer often at the USO and came to the social to get sundaes, play pool and see Kelly the therapy dog.

“The ice cream was great, and apparently I’m not very good at pool, but Kelly the dog makes me feel better,” said Emily.

Mojecki cares for Kelly, spends considerable time volunteering here at the USO, the Lebanon VA, and is pursuing a graduate degree in social work to continue her work with Veterans. She said that volunteering is a great opportunity for a family member who’s lost a loved one, because it allows the person to maintain their military connection.

“We’re trying to keep the memory of my son low key, the big focus is let’s get together and celebrate.”
