Story by Petty Officer 3rd Class Kelsey Adams

    Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet

SOUTH CHINA SEA—Fire Controlman 2nd Class Devon Cybulski, a native of Alexandria, Virginia, was announced as Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108) motivator of the week, Feb. 26.

Cybulski was selected as Wayne E. Meyer’s motivator of the week for the week of Feb. 18-25 for her outstanding work performance while underway during Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group’s Western Pacific Deployment.

“This week, Cybulski has stepped up to the role of Wayne E. Meyer strike team missile manager,” said Cmdr. Vincent A. Fortson, commanding officer of Wayne E. Meyer. “Her motivation to perform her best at her job has led to a vast improvement in our entire combat team’s capabilities.”

According to Fortson, Cybulski’s drive to succeed has led to many positive changes both inside and outside of her division.

“Cybulski led the troubleshooting efforts in the repair of a faulty fiber optic receiver inside the Tactical Tomahawk Weapons System, restoring the system and returning the strike team to 100 percent readiness,” said Fortson. “Her superior technical skills, dedication to the Wayne E. Meyer mission, and new found drive to train others in her division are why she was nominated as this week’s motivator of the week.”

Cybulski is a strong believer in motivation and persistence.

“My advice to other Sailors trying to win this award is don’t get discouraged even if it seems hard or you don’t get it right the first time,” said Cybulski. “There will always be stumbling blocks along the way, but don’t stop trying to reach your goals. Your team will be there to help and support you when you need it.”

Cybulski graduated from West Potomac High School in 2010, and joined the U.S. Navy in 2012.

Wayne E. Meyer is on a regularly scheduled Western Pacific deployment with the Carl Vinson Carrier Strike Group as part of the U.S. Pacific Fleet-led initiative to extend the command and control functions of U.S. 3rd Fleet into the Indo-Asia-Pacific region. U.S. Navy carrier strike groups have regularly patrolled the Indo-Asia-Pacific for more than 70 years and will continue to do so. Carl Vinson has deployed to the region several times, starting with a deployment to the Western Pacific in 1983, a year after commissioning. Most recently in 2015, Carl Vinson conducted port visits and exercises with regional navies in the South China Sea.
U.S. 3rd Fleet leads naval forces in the Pacific and provides the realistic, relevant training necessary for an effective global Navy. Third Fleet constantly coordinates with U.S. 7th Fleet to plan and execute missions based on their complementary strengths to promote ongoing peace, security, and stability throughout the entire Pacific theater of operations.
This deployment is Wayne E. Meyer’s third deployment to the Western Pacific since being commissioned Oct. 10, 2009, in Philadelphia.

The ship received its name from the late Rear Adm. Wayne E. Meyer, who is regarded as the “Father of Aegis” for his service as the AEGIS weapons system manager and later for his development of the AEGIS shipbuilding project office.
