Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 5 restored two concrete magazine pads at Camp Mujuk in Pohang, South Korea, Feb. 7-22.

During the project, NMCB 5 worked hand-in-hand with the Republic of Korea (ROK navy, to support the U.S. Marines with a higher quality area to store ammo and other supplies.

“Det. Chinhae project crew and ROK Navy did an awesome job; the dedication towards this project made it a lot easier to lead the crews to finish this project,” said Builder 2nd Class Eric Fredericks, project supervisor of Detail Chinhae. “We had some hard times with supplies, but with everyone’s hard work, we pushed away all the delayed factors and overcame the obstacles.”

The project crew and ROK navy executed the project with earthwork using an excavator to excavate and backfill, and a 10-ton roller to compact the pads.

“Working with the ROK navy was a unique experience for me and I am happy to work with them any time in my career,” said Construction Electrician 3rd Class Tanner Church. “Making formwork and setting rebar was a lot easier because we had support from them, and having the manpower also made it a lot easier to place concrete as well.”

After the earthwork was complete, crew members had to prefabricate and place the formwork with reinforcing bars. Following preparations, the crew placed concrete that totaled about 40 cubic yards and completed the finish work for the concrete, including troweling, bull floats, and a broom finish.

“I learned a lot from the Korean operators,” said Equipment Operator 3rd Class Julian Cook. “Working with construction equipment and support equipment (CESE) together created more positive bonding together and I was amazed at how experienced ROK Equipment Operators were.”

The detachment waited for two days until the concrete settled, then the crew removed the formwork and backfilled. After that, the crew cut the concrete into sections and finished housekeeping around the project site.

NMCB 5 is the forward deployed Pacific NMCB ready to support major combat operations and humanitarian assistance/disaster relief operations, and to provide general engineering and civil support to Navy, Marine Corps and joint operational forces. Homeported out of Port Hueneme California, NMCB 5 has 14 detachment sites deployed throughout the United States and Pacific area of operations, including two locations in the Philippines, Timor Leste, Palawan and Cambodia.
