Military Saves week is underway and runs until March 3, 2017. Every year, the Department of Defense teams up with the America Saves Organization to conduct Military Saves Week.

This weeklong event is designed to encourage service members and their families to practice effective, money-saving techniques. It also offers several workshops throughout the week to help participants achieve their goals.

“What better time to start this than the beginning of the year; we’re fresh into 2017,” said Richard Lambert, 4th Fighter Wing community support coordinator. “Time to take an assessment of where you’re at, what you want to achieve in life and along with those questions, the big question is ‘How are you going to get there?’ This is one path to get you to where you want to be.”

The available workshops are for members of all walks of life, whether they are dorm residents, looking to buy a home or planning for retirement.

“This year, it is going to be bigger, much bolder with more classes and reaching out to the entire population,” said Lambert. “We want to help our people succeed on all levels, both personally and professionally.”

During each workshop, participants are encouraged to fill out a Military Saves Week pledge and also designate one thing in particular they want to save for. Those who take the pledge will be entered into a drawing with a grand prize awarded at the end of Military Saves Week.

Members can also enter the contest by filling-out a pledge at the boxes located at the base library, Southern Eagle Dining Facility, Mission Support Group lobby, Child Development Center and the Airman and Family Readiness Center by March 3.

In addition to door prizes, participants will also have the opportunity to gain lifelong tips to develop money-saving techniques.

“We do understand that sometimes the money just won’t stretch,” said Debora Jefferson, 4th Force Support Squadron Airman & Family Readiness Center program manager. “We are going to do a workshop about how to pay down that debt quicker.”

One of the workshops recently conducted was the Thrift Savings Plan workshop. Attendees learned in-depth the difference between the traditional TSP and the Roth TSP.

“The speaker was very knowledgeable on the subject,” said Staff Sgt. Bradley Shallenburg, 4th Logistics Readiness Squadron vehicle equipment maintenance specialist. “They taught us how important it is to start investing early in life and showed us the difference it can make down the road.”

All of the workshops also earn military members stamps in their A&FRC Resiliency passport.
