A program to improve the security of bicycles, skateboards and scooters as well beautify the base housing community has been launched aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow.

Michael Reyes is a physical security specialist with Security and Emergency Services Department on base.

He said recently he was driving past the bus stop at the intersection of Montezuma and Inchon streets in the Desert View Housing Community and saw bicycles, skateboards and scooters lying on the ground and sidewalk rather than secured in the bicycle rack directly behind the bus kiosk.

“The command put that bike rack there specifically to help the children going to school secure their bikes,” he said.

Reyes said there are three reasons the children’s equipment needs to be locked up in the rack.

“The first thing is the appearance of the housing area when you approach it,” he said. “The second thing is there is a sidewalk where the bicycles laying on the ground could hinder walking on the sidewalk. The third issue is the aspect of security of the unattended equipment.”

Granted, he said, MCLB Barstow is a gated community where the possibility of theft is less than out in the city of Barstow, but it only takes seconds to stop a vehicle, toss a bike in the back and drive away.

“This base may not be the biggest in the Marine Corps,” Reyes said, “but when these children go to another base that is much bigger and that has established rules, developing good personal property security habits is important.

“So, if the parents and the children can help the command and us, from a law enforcement crime prevention aspect, that would be greatly appreciated,” Reyes said.

To that end, Reyes said the command has authorized establishing a program to encourage students to lock up their equipment in the provided rack as well as to mark their bicycles to make them easy to identify.

“The first step in making the base community more secure and to present a better appearance is awareness of the problem through The Prospector article.

“We could easily put a bike etching program into place to make distinct marks, numbers or whatever on the bicycle to make them easier to identify in the event they get stolen,” he said.

“The parents can call our office and set up a date and time for us to come out and assist them in marking their children’s bicycles,” Reyes explained.

After a roughly 60 day timeframe, Reyes said other measures would be taken. “I have spoken to the command and there is a plan in action,” he added.

“We want the bicycles, skateboards and scooters secured so that nobody has a temptation to take from others. There is a bike rack there. We don’t want the children to throw their bikes on the ground. We want them to be responsible and put their bikes in the rack and secure them,” Reyes said.

To call and arrange an appointment to etch your child’s bicycle, skateboard or scooter with identifying marks, contact Michael Reyes at 577-6858 or Charles Ayers at 6855.
