During the event service members donated new supplies to the school of 81 students after watching a special display of traditional Thai dancing, known as ram thai, performed by the students. Some Marines even took part in the dance, bringing merriment to the children. After the dance, service members joined students in the classrooms before eating lunch together.
During their time in class, the students and service members took a moment to introduce themselves before teaching each other Thai and English words. Some classrooms sang songs, such as the ABCs, while others quizzed each other on how to count or name the colors of the rainbow.
Children are essential to our country’s future, said Col. Boonsin Padklang, Royal Thai Army, 3rd Infantry Division chief of staff. English is very important, so this is a good opportunity for the students to learn from the Americans, he continued.
Overall it was a day full of relationship building between the Thai and U.S., strengthening an already sturdy alliance while supporting the health and welfare of the residents within the Ban Mai district.
I am happy that our nations have such a good and long relationship, Padkland said. I am excited and honored to continue strengthening the relationship between the Thai and U.S. in the future.
