FORWARD OPERATING BASE DELTA, Iraq – A ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the opening of a culvert bridge in Numaniyah, Aug. 8, 2008.
"The bridge helps all the citizens of Numaniyah," said Ali Abd al Karim, a contractor who helped construct the bridge. "It helps connect both sides of the city and ensures the free flow of water to both sides of the city."
The culvert bridge will also allow water to flow from the Tigris River to farmers on the outskirts of the city.
The opening signaled the end of the first stage of the two-phase project. Soldiers of El Salvador's Battalion Cuscatlán managed the initial phase, which began, April 19, 2008, and cost approximately $70,000, with funding originally from the 214th Fires Brigade's Commander's Emergency Relief Fund.
Colonel Walter Mauricio Arévalo, Battalion Cuscatlán commander, was on hand to cut the ribbon.
The second phase is under way and will include the expansion of the bridge from two to four lanes in order to facilitate the high volume of traffic expected on the bridge.
Boys from the area acknowledged the bridge's usefulness, but not as the designers originally intended. They used it as a platform for jumping into the water of the canal and beating the heat of an Iraqi summer day.
