Leadership of the Florida Air National Guard (FLANG) changed hands during a Change of Command ceremony on Feb. 10, during which Brig. Gen. James Eifert relinquished command to Brig. Gen. Brian Simpler on the parade field at the Joint Force Headquarters in St. Augustine, Florida.

Eifert, who was also promoted to the rank of Major General during the ceremony, was recently selected for a position in Hawaii as the Air National Guard adviser to the commander of Pacific Air Forces. He leaves behind a 21-year career with the Florida National Guard, and expressed his confidence in Simpler to continue the culture of excellence the FLANG is known for.

“With great confidence, I now leave you in the capable hands of one of the finest officers I have ever known, Brigadier General Brian Simpler. Like a member of my own family, I have worked with him closely and continuously for over 18 years and know well the full measure of his devotion to this family of ours – the Florida National Guard,” Eifert said. “Stitch, I could not be happier for your success, nor more confident of a commander’s fitness for this command.”

Simpler has been with the FLANG for 19 years serving as an F-15 pilot, Squadron and Wing Commander and, most recently, Chief of Staff. He assumed command during one of the most challenging and rewarding times in FLANG history. Airmen have been deployed to every combatant command around the world, the 125th Fighter Wing is in the running to receive the F-35, and the Alert Detachment and 101st AOC continue to guard the skies and keep the country safe.

Simpler said he is confident the FLANG will continue to achieve great accomplishments and looks forward to what the future will hold.

“The units of the Florida Air National Guard are just outstanding,” Simpler said. “We’ve got the most amazing Airmen that make up our formations and our squadrons and I hope to help them continue to do amazing things. I am really honored to serve alongside them.”
