KEESLER AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. – The 403rd Wing continuously looks for innovative ways to improve processes and increase efficiency. To spread awareness of Continuous Process Improvement, the Air Force Reserve unit hosted a three-day course for leadership. This course included a tour of Chemours DeLisle plant in Pass Christian, which makes Titanium Dioxide used in coatings and plastics, for attendees to learn how they implement process improvement.

CPI, formerly known as Air Force Smart Operations for the 21st Century, is about finding ways to maximize Air Force resources and increase efficiency in areas concerning people, money and time, said Chief Master Sgt. Monte Snyder, 403rd Wing process manager.

The course reviewed process improvement methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma, Theory of Constraints, Business Process Re-engineering, and the Air Force CPI 8-Step Practical Problem Solving Model.

“This course is a familiarization or refresher course about the role of leadership and supervision in this process so they can be a champion and identify areas where processes can be improved,” he said.

In addition to the classroom sessions, attendees toured a local manufacturing plant.

“The tour of Chemours was an immersion into what local industry does and how they use CPI in manufacturing so we can benchmark and see it in use, and learn how corporate America benefits from the process,” said Snyder.

“CPI focuses our attention on how we can do things better, which means we are using our resources to the best of our ability to make the mission happen and defend the nation and our homeland,” said Snyder.

As an Air Force reserve unit with 1,500 Citizen Airmen who come from 25 different states to train two days a month and 15 days a year, time and efficiency is crucial when it comes to accomplishing the weather reconnaissance, tactical airlift and aeromedical evacuation missions and supply combat ready Airmen to combatant commanders.

“We have an obligation to the tax payer … and we need to be able to make sure we can say we are using the money as effectively as possible,” said Col. Chad Segura, 403rd Mission Support Group commander who is responsible for providing security, communications, logistics, personnel management and information management programs for Reserve and civilian personnel. “But it’s also essential for our Airmen, and our Airmen’s time. When they come out here we need to make sure we have productive training, we need to make sure we are doing what they expected, preparing them to do a job. It is essential we continue to look at how we do every process and make it as efficient and effective as possible.”
