    Story by Capt. Fernando Ochoa

    311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command

SLOAN, Nev. – Sgt. Maj. Keith Christie, 650th Regional Support Group senior operations sergeant, organized and conducted a Best Warrior Competition at the George W. Dunaway Army Reserve Center in Sloan, Nev. February 7-9.

The Best Warrior Competition is an annual competition overseen by the Department of the Army as a means of identifying and recognizing Soldiers in active, special operations, National Guard and Reserve components of the United States Army.

During this three-day competition, participants are tested on their Army aptitude, conquering urban warfare simulations, board interviews, physical fitness tests, written exams, Warrior tasks and battle drills relevant to today’s operating environment.

“The Best Warrior Competition is extremely important to the Army in order to show others in the command what skills our warriors possess day to day in defense of our nation’s security,” said Christie. “During these events, the Soldier come together, competing and helping each other to be successful with a competitive spirit. To see the competitors continued resolve during this event makes me feel proud to see the next generation of Soldiers lead the Army.”

The sergeant major board was manned by Command Sgt. Maj. Darin Daniels, 650th RSG command sergeant major, Command Sgt. Maj. Denise Dial, 469th Combat Sustainment Support Command command sergeant major, Command Sgt. Maj. Donald Seay, 483rd Terminal Battalion command sergeant major, Sgt. Maj. Keith Christie and 1st Sgt. Barry Cox, 650th RSG first sergeant.

Many of the Soldiers who competed in this event had already competed in prior competitions, which made this a competitive event. The winners of this event will go on to compete at the 311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, then on to the U.S. Army Reserve Command level, and finally to the Department of the Army level.

The NCO winner was Sgt. Tyrone Haban, 924th Transportation Detachment, Fresno, Calif., and the junior enlisted winner was Spc. Kenny Ochoa, 481st Transportation Company, Port Hueneme, Calif.

“After competing last year I felt more comfortable, making it easier for me this year,” said Ochoa. “It was fun and a great experience, but I still have work to do for the next level. I feel honored to have won,”

Among the events, the competitors endured the Army physical fitness test, consisting of push-ups, sit-ups and a two mile-run, maneuvered through a land navigation course, fired M-4 rifles at the range and hiked a six-mile road march.

The competition was completed during a banquet at the Claim Jumper Restaurant, where certificates, medals, plaques and awards were handed out.

In 2011, the 650th RSG was realigned under the 311th ESC and took control of three battalions: the 314th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 469th CSSB and the 483rd Transportation Battalion. Its area of operation spans over three states, including California, Nevada and Arizona.
