Story by Lt. Col. Leonard Gratteri

    Delaware National Guard Public Affairs

The office call was intended to establish relationships between the two newly selected senior military leaders, the Delaware National Guards newly selected adjutant general, Brig. Gen. Carol A. Timmons and Smart. This was the first meeting between Timmons and Smart where both leaders had the opportunity to present their vision for the state partnership program moving forward. In addition, senior leaders from DNG participated in the discussion and introduced themselves along with their roles and responsibilities.

Delaware National Guard leaders discussed several areas where the DNG will work to strengthen our state partnership with Trinidad and Tobago. The guest instructor training program was discussed as an area where both organizations could further strengthen military cooperation by hosting guest training instructors from each nation. Collaborating on training programs will enable both nations to learn from each other increasing training effectiveness. In addition, Timmons expressed her commitment to approach DNG training exercises as an opportunity to leverage our state partnership program.

As the head of Trinidad and Tobago’s defense force, Smart discussed his vision and focus of the state partnership program. “I see our partnership as more than military to military engagement, I would like increase our parliamentary exchange of ideas and best practices between our governments,” said Smart. “I see the partnership program between Trinidad and Tobago and Delaware as a whole partnership, military and governmental.”

As the introductory meeting came to a close, Timmons and Smart exchanged military coins as a commitment to fostering and growing the state partnership program. Because of the many similarities between Delaware and Trinidad and Tobago, the twelve year partnership remains a prosperous one. This is sure to be just the beginning of a historic partnership as both of the newly appointed military leaders become immersed in their duties and continue to grow this partnership.
