CAMP FOSTER, OKINAWA, Japan – The Camp Foster Tax Center is scheduled to open Feb. 1 at Bldg. 5717 aboard Camp Foster.
The tax center is open annually to active duty service members, retirees and dependents for free personal tax filing between February and June.
“Our goal is to make tax filing more convenient,” said Cpl. Charles Duus, a tax filing reviewer with the Camp Foster Tax Center. “Our staff is trained for tax preparation and will assist every step of the way to ensure the maximum return.”
There are often technical issues that accompany filing taxes overseas such as considerable delays.
“Service members and families stationed overseas are allotted the first six months of the calendar year to file taxes,” said Duus, a Maple Shade, New Jersey, native. “Some choose to file taxes online. While this is convenient, sometimes it can be difficult to find someone to talk to personally about complications or questions you may have. Our staff is equipped through the Volunteer Income Tax Preparer Training to answer questions and suggest all the possible credits you may be eligible for.”
To utilize the tax center’s filing assistance, service members, dependents, and retirees must present W-2, interest or retirement paperwork, and a valid ID card.
“My first year on Okinawa, I filed my taxes online,” said Katrina Swartout, a Carmel, Indiana, native. “It was convenient, but a little difficult to get assistance with technical issues. At the tax center, the process was easy. All we had to do was bring in our documents and identification and the staff took care of everything and answered all of our questions.”
The tax center office hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Fridays. Services will be available on a walk-in basis only.
