ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England -- The Lakenheath Single Dad Association is a group for single dads, run by single dads.
They meet every month to network, learn from each other and discuss how to talk to their kids about touchy subjects.
“Our goal is to ensure every guy in this group is taken care of,” the association president said.
To accomplish this goal, the SDA partnered with the Lakenheath Elementary School to give the dads a Christmas shopping day, providing them with free child care while they looked for the perfect gifts for their kids.
The SDA also brought in hair stylists to teach the dads how to do their kids’ hair, and the association hopes to host a cooking class in the future. The SDA is open to all kinds of single dads, even if the single
part is just temporary.
“It’s not just for people who are divorced, but for people who are here and their spouse is deployed or TDY for a long period of time,” said Susan Reisch, RAF Lakenheath school psychologist. “All of a sudden you are taking on everything. Single dads are growing in the military, and it’s not something that is talked about much.”
That growing demographic is why the SDA is always looking for new members.
“The main thing is getting the word out to all these dads that may be around here that we support,” said one SDA member. “You’re not alone, there are others out there just like you just trying to raise their kids as best they can.”
Those interested in learning more about the SDA can contact the Lakenheath school psychologist office at 01638 526355. The next meeting is scheduled for Feb. 21.
