BAGHDAD – Command Sgt. Maj. Marvin Hill toured the Striker area of operations during a visit to northern Baghdad District of Adhamiyah, July 27.

Hill, the senior enlisted leader for Multi-National Force – Iraq, visited Soldiers at combat outposts and joint security stations filled with Soldiers assigned to 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Multi-National Division – Baghdad.

"Part of [this visit] was to make sure that the Soldiers know that leadership at the highest level, of Multi-National Force – Iraq, appreciate what they're doing," Hill said.

The visit also offered Hill a chance to talk with Soldiers who were responsible for helping to secure the Sadr City district after hostilities intensified there beginning, March 25.

"They've made a difference," said the Memphis, Tenn., native. It was "a tremendous effort, valorous acts, just a remarkable effort by some young men and women who have really made a difference for the people of Iraq."

At each stop, Hill was given a tour of the facilities – many of which have made strides to go from austere to a place of refuge – and spoke with Soldiers to answer questions and commend them for their work.

Hill also presented select Soldiers with his personal challenge coin during an informal ceremony at each combat outpost or joint security station. The coins, which he made note of, are only awarded for "actions in combat."

"It's hard to work and feel like nobody notices even though you feel like you're doing a lot. It's just nice that people notice and put you in for it," said Staff Sgt. Patrick Turner, fire support non-commissioned officer for Company B, 1st Squadron, 2nd SCR, which is currently attached to 3rd BCT, 4th Inf. Div.

Turner, along with other members of the 1st Squadron, 2nd SCR, are preparing to move to another location in Iraq. Hill said he wanted to see the troops before they left the Baghdad region to praise them for helping pacify the uprising in Sadr City.

"It was another opportunity to tell those guys that we appreciate the effort. They run toward the sound of the guns. We need them up north now and they're packing up and moving out," Hill said.

After accepting the acknowledgement of a job successfully completed, Turner said he hoped others could be awarded for their efforts as well.

"It doesn't matter what rank you are from Joe to the highest ranking officer, everybody works hard. I wish everybody could get one," said the Lake Wells, Fla., native.
