By PO3 Timothy Johnson
GROTON, Conn. –Navy Information Operations Detachment (NIOD) Groton frocked seven Sailors to the next pay grade during a ceremony Dec. 2.
During the event, also attended by family members, five Sailors advanced to Petty Officer 3rd Class, one Sailor advanced to Petty Officer 2nd Class, and one Sailor advanced to Petty Officer 1st Class.
In addition to those frocked, Seaman Timothy Johnson was promoted to Petty Officer 3rd Class the Accelerated Advancement Program.
In keeping with NIOD tradition, the NIOD Groton First Class Petty Office Association (FCPOA) presented each Sailor with their Navy working uniform cover reflecting their new rank.
“It is always a great day when you get to see the most deserving Sailors get promoted to their new rank,” said Chief Warrant Officer 4 Jarvis Ware, the Operations Officer at NIOD Groton.
Frocking ceremonies allow Sailors to assume the title and wear the uniform of the next rank before the entitlement of increased pay or other monetary allowances. The appointment carries with it the obligation that each frocked Sailor exercise increased authority and willingly accept greater responsibility.
NIOD Groton is subordinate to Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) Norfolk, and aligns under Task Force 1030 and ultimately U.S. Fleet Cyber Command/U.S. 10th Fleet.
U.S. Fleet Cyber Command serves as the Navy component command to U.S. Strategic Command and U.S. Cyber Command, and the Navy's Service Cryptologic Component commander under the National Security Agency/Central Security Service. Fleet Cyber Command also reports directly to the Chief of Naval Operations as an echelon II command.
U.S. 10th Fleet is the operational arm of Fleet Cyber Command and executes its mission through a task force structure similar to other warfare commanders. In this role, C10F provides operational direction through its Maritime Operations Center located at Fort George Meade Md., executing command and control over assigned forces in support of Navy or joint missions in cyber/networks, information operations, electronic warfare, cryptologic/signals intelligence and space.
