SAN DIEGO –San Diego Chargers running back Melvin Gordon, Rally Health and the Armed Services YMCA hosted a “Holiday Bike Build” Dec. 13, at Admiral Prout Field House on Naval Base San Diego.
The event gave 52 children of Sailors stationed at Naval Base San Diego the opportunity to build a custom bike to take home.
“You have to give your hats off to our servicemembers; they go through so much leaving their family,” said Gordon. “I appreciate that and can never thank them enough for what they do.”
In addition to Sailors and their families getting to meet Melvin Gordon, the event also included potato sack races, agility exercises and the children getting the opportunity to take several laps around the track on their brand new bikes.
“Everyone enjoyed the event to include the people who organized it,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Corinna Bishop, assigned to USS Boxer (LHD 4). “I think when you plan events like this and see the end result, with all the smiles on the children’s faces, it makes it completely worthwhile.”
Bishop added that all of the bikes were just a little too big for her son Braylon and he did not receive one, but Gordon invited Bishop and her family to Sunday’s football game.
