AL UDEID AIR BASE, Qatar—Al Udeid AB members commemorated the devastating Dec. 7 attack on Pearl Harbor by showcasing their physical discipline with a Jiu-Jitsu tournament and 5K run the week of the 75th anniversary.

“It is important to remember our heritage and history as U.S. service members, so the Jiu-Jitsu team here wanted to show a little appreciation during this tournament,” said Master Sgt. Shaun Duffy, a superintendent with the 379th Expeditionary Force Support Squadron.

Participants used the commemoration as an opportunity to come together and honor the sacrifice and dedication of those who perished and those who survived the attack, both civilian and military.

“Pearl Harbor is one of those defining moments that, while tragic, bonded those that experienced it and brought them together for a common goal,” said Duffy. “While technically an individual sport, Jiu-jitsu cannot be done without a strong team and the experience bonds you to those you train with.”

Adam Lorenzen, a special agent with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, said that peace is only possible when we are fully prepared to defend ourselves.

“On Dec. 7, 1941 our nation was attacked by those who sought to take advantage of our peaceful posture,” explained Lorenzen. “The American response to that aggression was conducted in a measured and responsible way that made the world a safer place.”

The events of Pearl Harbor endure as a symbol of American resilience and the annual commemoration serves to foster reflection and understanding.

“When I think of Pearl Harbor I remember that the disaster didn’t end that day, the destruction left scars that will never heal,” said Master Sgt. Joseph Gluckert, a historian with the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing.
