SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. --
U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program wrestlers Cadet Michael Hooker, University of Colorado Colorado Springs ROTC and 2nd Lt. Marco Lara, visited Schriever Air Force Base for a tour and to host a wrestling demonstration, Nov. 15.
As part of WCAP Hooker and Lara are required to participate in community service and represent the Army. The athletes came to the base after being invited to come visit the base by Col. Jason Janaros, 50th Mission Support Group commander.
Janaros initiated dialogue with some of the WCAP wrestlers who were volunteering at a tournament his son was competing in.
“This visit is one of the most enjoyable experiences I have had in the Army. I was able to see the things that I had never thought of before being in the Army. This helps me make myself a better leader as an upcoming officer overall,” said Hooker.
Hooker and Lara’s first stops was at the 4th Space Operations Squadron, where they were briefed by 1st Lt. Cole Von Ohlen, Information Assurance officer, who is a former Air Force WCAP athlete himself.
“I thought that my visit to the SOPS was beneficial,” said Hooker.
In their next stop at the 50th Security Forces training complex, Lara and Hooker were briefed by Tech. Sgt. Michael Kennedy, 50 SFS trainer, shown tools Security Forces members use daily and participated in a breaching exercise and RedMan training.
“I enjoyed the red man exercise because I got to see how the defenders manage their jobs. I have a newfound respect for them,” said Hooker.
The day concluded with a wrestling demonstration open to all Department of Defense employees and their families. Staff Sgt. Morris Thomas and his wrestling team “Children of Valor” were on-hand to help and learn during the demonstration.
“Having my guys get the opportunity to wrestle with the WCAP wrestlers, pick their techniques and use that experience for future events is a good activity for them. They could see the level that they can be at if they work hard,” said Thomas.
“I thought the demonstration at the fitness center was a beneficial exercise that helped me see a new perspective of the Air Force,” said Hooker.
