Troopers from throughout Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield earned their silver spurs as 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment hosted a Spur Ride at Fort Stewart, Georgia Dec. 5-7.
Command Sgt. Maj. Timothy Bolyard, the senior enlisted advisor for 5th Sqdn., 7th Cav. Rgmt., said the Spur Ride helped build esprit de corps while challenging the candidates physical and mental toughness.
Bolyard said of the 101 Soldiers who signed up for the Spur Ride, 88 completed the challenge and were inducted into the Order of the Spur.
“Everybody can participate as long as they meet the standard and can earn something,” said Bolyard. “When 101 Soldiers choose to participate in training, that's a good thing.”
Over the three days, spur candidates took part in a stress shoot, a physical challenge, skills testing, day and night land navigation, and finished with a 12-mile road march.
Sgt. Teri Chojnacki, a combat medic with 5th Sqdn., 7th Cav. Rgmt., said though the Spur Ride was difficult and physically demanding, she is proud she was able to successfully complete the challenge.
“I love working with the scouts and learned a lot from them,” said Chojnacki. “It feels good to be a spur holder.”
Bolyard said all of the Troopers did great and he could tell they were proud of their accomplishments.
“You can see it in their face, the motivation, and when they finish the 12-mile ruck march how happy they are that they achieved something,” said Bolyard.
