SILVERDALE, Wash. (Dec. 7, 2016) – The Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division, Keyport, hosted a Pearl Harbor Remembrance Ceremony Dec. 7 in the Jack Murdock Auditorium to recognize the 75th year since the attacks on Pearl Harbor.
“It is important that we continue to remember these types of events in our nation’s history so that we don’t repeat them in the future,” said Rear Adm. Gary Mayes, commander, Navy Region Northwest.
The ceremony marked the 23rd year that the NUWC, Division, Keyport has hosted a remembrance ceremony. Retired and Active duty service members, members of the public and the Mayor of Bremerton were in attendance.
The Bremerton Olympic Peninsula Chapter of the Navy League of the U.S. procured American flags that flew over the USS Arizona memorial in Pearl Harbor to present to three surviving veterans of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Lloyd Valnes, USS California, Roy Carter, USS Oklahoma, and Bob Rains, USS Pennsylvania. Unfortunately none of them were able to make the ceremony.
“These occasions are important, when we get together to remember our warriors, our heroes, those who were actually there,” said Chaplain (Lt. Cmdr.) Dwayne Jackson, Naval Base Kitsap. “And as a Navy guy myself, I can’t help but think about what they must have been feeling, what was going in their minds during the attack.
Cmdr. Carlos Cintron, executive officer, NUWC, and Lt. Shannon Shaw, NUWC, narrated some of accounts of what happened on the day that more than 2,000 people lost their lives; a day that President Franklin Roosevelt said, “will live in infamy…”
“We need to allow the next generations to come and bear witness of how strong our nation has become from such an event as this,” said Bremerton Mayor Patty Lent. “I am always honored to be present.”
“I thought it was an outstanding ceremony,” said Mayes. “It was moving the way they put it together.”
“It is good for us to remember,” said Jackson. “So we will never forget.”
