The First Sergeant’s Council hosted the 10th annual Gold Star Ruck March across Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey, Oct. 8, 2016.

The 10k ruck march is dedicated to honoring the families of fallen service members, who are known as Gold Star Families.

“The 30-pound ruck is symbolic of the burden the families carry,” said Senior Master Sgt. Kristopher Green, first sergeant, 305th Aerial Port Squadron. “This ruck march is over after 6 miles, but the burden that the families carry endures forever.”

During the event, teams from across the Joint Base showed to represent one of 28 Gold Star Families who attended the event in friendly competition while honoring their fallen comrades.

“We never stop remembering,” said Chief Master Sgt. Timothy Pachasa, 305th Air Mobility Wing command chief. “We never forget who they were, what they stood for, what they sacrificed and who they left behind.”

Green expressed a sincere thanks to the hard work of the First Sergeant’s Council and all parties involved in planning and executing the event.

“The Joint Base will continue to host the Gold Star Ruck March indefinitely,” said Green. “All those in uniform share a special bond, and never forget their fallen brothers and sisters.”

The legacy of our fallen comrades drives us and keeps us moving, said Pachasa as he explained how these sacrifices are what keeps us motivated to complete our mission.

“It’s what makes us hug our loved ones a little bit harder,” said Pachasa. “It’s what makes us cherish the small things in life and makes us live for today. Because as we all know, no one is promised tomorrow.”
