OSAN AIR BASE, South Korea - The 35th Air Defense Artillery Brigade’s annual Turkey Bowl is big deal, and not just for bragging rights.

This year’s annual game was played in Chilgok Stadium near Camp Carroll, Republic of Korea, a massive structure capable of housing nearly 20,000 raucous soccer fans. Through continued relationship building between 2nd Battalion, 1st ADA Regiment and the local community, the Mayor of Chilgok County, Mr. Baek, Seon-gi opened the gates for the Dragon Brigade Nov. 22.

“Playing in this amazing stadium says a lot about the relationship we’ve built within our local community,” said Cpt. Cody Davis, 2-1 ADA organizer of the event. “Soldiers within our unit regularly volunteer and look for ways to give back, and because of that selfless service, we were able to play here.”

The junior team consisted of Soldiers E-1 through E-6, with the first match-up of the day between 6th Battalion, 52nd ADA Regiment and 2-1 ADA. Spc. Dante Smith, 6-52 ADA, had a dominant performance grabbing two touchdown passes over leaping defenders, and helping his team advance to the championship game.

The senior team consisted of Soldiers E-7 and above, and pitted 6-52 ADA against 2-1 ADA for a chance to meet the Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 35th ADA Brigade in the championship game. The lone score belonged to Cpt. John Lucero of 2-1 ADA, a long rushing touchdown that proved to be the difference.

In the inaugural Korean Augmentee to the United States Army Soccer game, Soldiers and KATUSAs from HHB and 6-52 ADA competed against 2-1 ADA for the winner take all game. The combined HHB and 6-52 ADA team came out strong, and won easily with a score of three to nil.

In the junior championship game between the HHB Honey Badgers and 6-52 ADA, the offensives struggled to move the ball, and neither team was able to find pay-dirt. As a result, 6-52 ADA won in overtime by amassing the most yards, the measurement in determining the winner.

Finally, in the senior championship game between HHB and players from the 3rd Battlefield Coordination Detachment against 2-1 ADA, the teams played in the most highly anticipated game of the day. Cpt. David Matautia, HHB, the team captain and quarterback got the team off to a fast start by rushing for one score and passing for another in the first half. The Honey Badger defense handled the rest by holding the Guardian Battalion scoreless as they failed to defend their title.

“I knew if we had fun and communicated well, our team would play great,” said Matautia. “We played disciplined football with great teamwork, I’m already looking forward to playing at home next year.”

The team that wins the senior division hosts the following year’s Turkey Bowl, the complement to bragging rights for winning the game. However, with a live DJ, pig roast, and an elite stadium, the Honey Badgers will have their hands full in reproducing this year’s atmosphere.
