The Single Marine Program is giving single Marines and Sailors at Marine Corps Air Station New River and Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune the opportunity to have a Thanksgiving meal, Nov. 24. The program wants to ensure Marines who are unable to go home are not alone this Thanksgiving.

Community members will be opening their homes to about four Marines or Sailors each. Each home will provide a meal and entertainment. Transportation will be provided for Marines to get to and from these homes.

"Marines and Sailors for that day can expect not only a home cooked meal, but some (community members) have boats, golf courses and certainly football on TV," said Susan Goodrich, single Marine program branch head.

Marines and Sailors who do not choose to participate in this can also go to the nearest recreational center and get a Thanksgiving dinner there.

"We use our (recreational centers) and we have seven aboard this base, that includes New River, with our staff in place," said Goodrich. "We have a full course Thanksgiving Day meal set up with turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, (it’s) a nice meal that’s another choice to get Marines and Sailors out of their rooms especially those that are living in the barracks."

Marines and Sailors are never alone, the Single Marine Program works with the recreation centers to provide Marines and Sailors with the opportunity to make new friends.

"I don’t think anyone should be alone on the holidays," said Jeff Clifton, recreation center manager for French Creek. "We are your family and it’s our way of giving back and saying thank you."

To contact the Single Marine Program for more information about Thanksgiving meals in the community call 451-4642, 451-1767 or email Susan Goodrich at goodrichsd@usmc-mccs.org.
