Letterkenny Munitions Center (LEMC) recently demonstrated why it is Joint Munitions Command’s East Coast Power Projection Platform by successfully out-loading more than 200 containers of munitions supporting U.S. European Command’s (EUCOM) Theater Reset and U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) in the Middle East.
In May, LEMC personnel worked seven days a week building dunnage, pulling and inspecting munitions, packing containers, processing documents, and loading railcars to meet all mission requirements. Overall, LEMC’s dedicated team processed more than 2,800 tons of munitions needed by warfighters conducting operations.
“LEMC’s ability to respond to the needs of Geographical Combatant Commanders, like CENTCOM and EUCOM, with the rapid and efficient projection of munitions is critical to maintaining the readiness of the force.” said Lt. Col. Trenton J. Conner, commander of Letterkenny Munitions Center. “Operations like this also help us maintain our readiness to respond to contingencies, should the need arise.”
Between existing facilities, material handling equipment and personnel, LEMC has the capability to load 200 containers in 24 hours. With 27 rail docks and 28 miles of rail on post, LEMC is serviced by CSX for rail and is located within 15 miles of a Norfolk Southern Railroad interchange.
The facility also efficiently handles commercial trucks 24/7 and LEMC’s location provides convenient highway access to seaports, including Military Ocean Terminal, Sunny Point, North Carolina and several Air Force Bases (AFB), including Dover AFB and McGuire AFB.
LEMC is located on Letterkenny Army Depot and is a government owned, government operated installation. As the Army’s East Coast Power Projection Platform for munitions, LEMC conducts regional and global distribution of munitions, provides missile maintenance, and conducts demilitarization of munitions for Joint Forces and international partner nations.
