Onslow County principals visit Air Station

Principals from across the Onslow County School district received a tour of the New River Aviation Memorial, visited the Marine Corps Air Station New River Officer’s Club, received a demonstration of the indoor simulated marksmanship trainer and toured an MV – 22 Osprey Nov. 15.

The Aviation Memorial is dedicated to the Marines who died during a nighttime training exercise in 1996. The creation of the memorial was the combined result of the personal and corporation donations made and fund raising.

"Today was a very enlightening experience to understand the history of the memorial and what it represents," said Helen Gross, principal of Swansboro Middle School. "Certainly when I drive by (the memorial), I’m going to take a moment to reflect and appreciate the dedication of our service members to our local community here at Onslow County."

Gross had visited the air station before but did not know the reason behind the Aviation Memorial until she was given the opportunity to be part of the tour.

"Everything we do is connected to the base," said Curtis Ehmann, principal of Jacksonville Commons Middle School. "The more we understand military life, military culture and things the military families are going through, the better we are going to be able to serve our students. I would say 40 percent of our students are military dependents and half of my staff are military spouses or retirees."

A symbol of moving forward between the community and the installation in recent years is the incorporation of Brewster Middle School, a school on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, with the Onslow County Athletic Conference.

"It’s a reciprocal relationship where everyone who is part of the cooperation reaps the benefits," said Ehmann. "The better, the closer and the stronger our relationship is (between Onslow School District and the installation) the better we can serve our students."
