Marines, Sailors and their families came together to run the 5k Zombie Run on Marine Corps Air Station New River North Carolina, Oct 28.

The runners wore orange streamers as they ran down the trail littered with volunteer zombies and ghouls. The living dead were tasked with grabbing the orange streamers to ‘kill’ the runners and give the runners a Halloween scare.

"This event gives the Marines and their families the opportunity to come aboard the air station and have a good time," said Jeff Clifton, one of the event coordinators. "It brings people closer together and allows different communities to come together as a whole and create a fun-filled atmosphere."

The volunteers worked together to come up with creative ways to scare and grab the orange streamers from the runners. Some of the volunteers were meeting for the first time but were sharing laughs at their accomplishments and close calls.

"This event helped me relax," said Lance Cpl. Zachary Wolsieffer, a cyber network operator with 8th Communication Battalion. "As a Marine it helped keep my mind away from work, the range, martial arts training and other work activities by hanging out with some new buddies and scaring people."

Wolsieffer was a volunteer ghoul with the ghoul gaggle who decided to use the bridges as ambush points. He concealed himself with the fallen branches of nearby trees while the other zombies hid behind signs and waited for his initial scare as a signal to scare the runners.

"This kind of event builds a sense of community," said Col. Russell Burton, the commanding officer of Marines Corps Air Station New River. "The community is created not only within the air station, but with folks out in town that have the opportunity to participate and make the work place a close community."

The runners were greeted at the end of the trail by spectators and more volunteers with water bottles and fresh hotdogs.

"The event was well thought out and professionally run," said Burton. "The costumes and props were great and the Marines’ performances were worthy of ‘The Walking Dead.’ The zombies out there got me this year, and I’m putting out the challenge that they won’t get me next year."
