Soldiers from Company B, 2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment ran a 27-mile relay Nov. 11 to honor our nation’s Veterans.
The Soldiers ran from Fort Stewart to J.F. Gregory Park in Richmond Hill. Groups switched out relay-style at designated transition points along the 27-mile route, with each group running approximately 6.5 miles.
Markers were placed every third-mile to represent Soldiers from the battalion who were killed in action during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as the battalion’s Medal of Honor recipients.
“One of the reasons we are doing this is to keep our young Soldiers connected to the legacy that these Soldiers in the past have done, particularly those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in our nation’s wars,” said Capt. Benjamin Hunter, the commander for Co. B, 2nd Bn., 7th In. Rgmt.
The Soldiers finished the run at J.F. Gregory Park right before the Richmond Hill Memorial Ceremony began.
“[The run] strengthens the bond between the Army and our local communities,” said Hunter. “I think that is really what Veterans Day is for, for the civilians to connect with the Veterans in their community.”
First Lt. Colby Miller, a platoon leader with Co. B, 2nd Bn., 7th In. Rgmt., said his Soldiers were eager for the run and to show their appreciation for the Veterans.
“It’s important to us because we want to show respect and we just want to show that we are thankful that we serve in the greatest military in the world,” added Miller.
