BATON ROUGE, La. -- Service members participating in Baton Rouge Navy Week completed a Community Relations (COMREL) project alongside volunteers from the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank (GBRFB), Nov. 4.
The COMREL, focused on separating and delivering donated food items to low-income seniors, is part of GBRFB’s Adopt-a-Senior food distribution program.
“We’re out here helping seniors on limited incomes,” said Kenneth Clayborne, a warehouse coordinator for Adopt-a-Senior. “After living expenses like food, water, rent, and medicine there is usually not a lot left over financially for these members of our community.”
Volunteers included Sailors assigned to the ballistic-missile submarine USS Louisiana (SSBN 743) who were in Baton Rouge for Navy Week events.
“Taking part in Navy Week, and this COMREL was a very rewarding experience,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Jacob Singleton, a crew member aboard USS Louisiana. “It feels great to be in this city helping those less fortunate that us.”
Every year, America's Navy comes home to approximately 15 cities across the country to show Americans why having a strong Navy is critical to the American way of life.
Since 2005, the Navy Week program has served as the Navy's principal outreach effort into areas of the country without a significant Navy presence. The program is designed to help Americans understand their Navy is deployed around the world, around the clock, ready to defend America at all times.
Navy Weeks focus a variety of outreach assets, equipment, and personnel on a single city for a weeklong series of engagements with key influencers and organizations representing all sectors of the market. During a Navy Week, 75-100 outreach events are coordinated with corporate, civic, government, education, media, veterans, community service and diversity organizations in the city.
