JEA’s clean-up event focused on improving the appearance of areas along the beach and waterfront in an effort to maintain the positive relationship between San Diego and the U.S. Navy.
“JEA is creating intrinsic value for the Navy through volunteer programs that the community can see,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Roglio Magana, JEA’s Vice President.
The two-hour event consisted of Magana along with Petty Officer 2nd Class Stephanie D. Csitkovits, JEA’s President, leading a group of junior Sailors and civilian volunteers in the integrated community outreach mission.
Csitkovists expressed how pleased she was about the enthusiasm and amount of participants throughout the day. “With the word getting out about us, we’re receiving more and more support every day,” said Csitkovits.
With gloves and garbage bags, SWRMC’s volunteers began with the jogging trail, moved to the parking lot, and continued in various sections of the beach, collecting garbage leftover from beach visitors.
“Mentorships, community involvement, and demonstrating social and ethical responsibility for our environment make events like this a benefit for everyone involved,” said Magana. “It’s not only about the mission at sea, but homeport operations as well.”
